Preparing for an Emotional and Busy Day
Let me just go ahead and prepare you. You will cry a lot of happy tears—so be sure to buy the waterproof mascara. Expect your feet to hurt, so bring a change of shoes. You’ll likely feel exhausted, so don’t forget to take your vitamins and care for yourself throughout the day.

What You Really Need to Know
No matter how many things you find that are not exactly perfect, all those concerns will fade away when you and everyone else see the joy on your daughter’s face.
Accepting Help from Others
You will need help. When family and friends ask, “Do you need help?” say “Yes” and hand them whatever task is at hand so you can move on to the next thing. Let them set out the chargers, wash the glasses, arrange the flowers in vases, light all 52 candles, fill the drink dispensers with tea, put the fruit into cups, and fill the coolers with ice. Just let them help.

Capturing Memories
Hand your phone to your best friend. As strange as it may sound, this was the best thing my friend did for me. She took my phone away, which allowed me to focus on the moments—dancing, laughing, crying—and all the while, she filled my camera with photos of me, of every single person, the dances, the speeches, everything. I didn’t realize it until the next day when I finally took a breath and opened my photos. I cried even more happy tears.

Getting Help with Cleanup
Ask others to stay late and help with cleanup. You might think people will volunteer, but most will gradually head out, leaving you to hurriedly pack everything into the car in a panic. After all the decorating and emotions, you’ll be exhausted. You need people there to help pack up table runners, empty drink dispensers, collect centerpieces, take out the trash, sweep up cake crumbs, and mop up spilled champagne. All the items you spent 3-4 hours carefully placing and securing with zip ties have to be taken down and moved out in an hour or less—so be sure to ask for help ahead of time.

Let Others Honor You
Finally, allow others to honor you. My family gave me a beautiful card and blanket, recognizing all that I had done to make my daughter’s wedding day special. Many daughters request a mother-daughter dance in addition to the traditional mother-father dance as a way to honor their mothers. Some mothers are asked to walk the aisle with the bride, and many brides gift their moms jewelry while getting ready. A new tradition involves dedicating the bouquet to the mother instead of a traditional bouquet toss—a public recognition of her love. Many moms shy away from these moments, wanting the focus to remain on their daughters, but embrace these gestures and savor the love behind them.
